Back in 1997, long before “eco” became a trend, I took a leap of faith and developed one of the very first fully off-grid eco resorts. As the founder of Eco Structures, I’ve had the unique privilege of watching sustainable travel grow from a niche concept into a global movement that’s reshaping how we explore the world.
Having been at the forefront from the beginning, I understand what it takes to create truly sustainable, nature-immersed experiences. This journey has equipped me with the knowledge to educate and advise others who want to build resorts that respect and celebrate our environment.
Travellers are increasingly seeking luxury experiences that immerse them in nature while minimising environmental impact. This rise of sustainable travel is not just a trend; it’s a fundamental change in the way we connect with our planet.
Understanding the Increase in Sustainable Travel
The increase in sustainable travel reflects a growing awareness of our responsibility to protect the environment. Travellers today are more conscious of their ecological footprint and are demanding experiences that align with their values.
Several factors contribute to this rise:
- Environmental Awareness: Climate change and environmental degradation have heightened the desire to travel responsibly.
- Cultural Immersion: There’s a yearning to engage authentically with local communities and preserve cultural heritage.
- Wellness and Well-being: Nature-immersed experiences offer rejuvenation and a deeper connection with the natural world.
The Allure of Nature-Immersed Luxury Experiences
Luxury travel is evolving to embrace authenticity and sustainability. Nature-immersed luxury experiences provide an escape from the everyday, allowing travellers to reconnect with themselves and the environment.
- Unique Accommodations: Luxurious eco-tents and villas that blend seamlessly with natural surroundings.
- Experiential Activities: Wildlife conservation, guided nature walks, and cultural exchanges enrich the journey.
- Sustainable Practices: Eco-friendly operations that prioritise resource conservation and community engagement.
Eco Structures: Pioneering Low-Impact Sustainable Travel Solutions
At Eco Structures, we specialise in creating low-impact, sustainable accommodations that redefine luxury. Our designs minimise environmental disruption, ensuring that natural landscapes remain unspoilt for future generations. Here’s how we make sustainability a tangible reality:
- Eco Anchors: Concrete-Free Foundations
Traditional construction often requires concrete foundations, which can be invasive and harmful to the environment. We utilise Eco Anchors—concrete-free foundation systems that minimise ground disturbance. These anchors are installed without the need for excavation, preserving the natural terrain and root systems of surrounding vegetation. - Brace and Lift Kits: Eliminating the Need for Retaining Walls and Excavation
Our Brace and Lift Kits allow structures to be built on sloped or uneven sites without extensive excavation or the construction of retaining walls. By elevating our structures, we protect the natural topography and reduce soil erosion, ensuring that the landscape remains intact. - Structural Steel: Endlessly Recyclable and Manufactured with Zero Waste
We construct our frameworks using structural steel, a material renowned for its durability and sustainability. Steel is endlessly recyclable and can be repurposed without loss of quality. Our manufacturing processes are designed to produce zero waste, further reducing our ecological footprint. - Freight Shipping: Reducing Carbon Footprint
Recognising the environmental impact of transportation, we avoid all air freight and exclusively use sea freight for shipping our materials globally. We consolidate multiple projects into single shipments, maximising container space and significantly reducing carbon emissions associated with transport. - Thoughtful Master Planning: Working with the Landscape
Our architects prioritise designing projects that harmonise with the natural environment. We make it our goal to plan developments without removing any trees, carefully situating structures to work with the existing landscape rather than against it. This approach preserves local ecosystems and enhances the natural beauty of each site.
Our commitment is to provide luxury without compromise, ensuring that each project not only meets the highest standards of comfort but also upholds our responsibility to the environment.
Case Studies: Creating Sustainable Experiences in World Heritage Sites
Our work spans the globe, including projects in World Heritage-listed sites and Class A reserves. Here are some examples of how we’ve helped clients create unforgettable, sustainable experiences.
Vinetree Honghegu Tented Resort, China
Nestled above the ruins of an ancient village in Yunnan Province, the Vinetree Honghegu Tented Resort offers 17 eco-tents that tell the story of the Hani ethnic group’s history. By integrating modern tents with old buildings, we created a resort that immerses guests in both nature and culture. The elevated structures minimise ground impact, preserving the surrounding landscape.
Swell Lodge Eco Retreat, Christmas Island
Swell Lodge is an exclusive eco-lodge located within Christmas Island National Park, a RAMSAR wetland area. With just two luxury eco-chalets perched on sea cliffs, guests enjoy all-inclusive packages with minimal environmental impact. The chalets are 100% solar-powered, feature composting toilets, and utilise greywater treatment systems. This project showcases how luxury and sustainability can coexist in even the most sensitive environments.
Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort, Queensland
Situated on the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef, Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort wanted to enhance their accommodation offerings while aligning with their strong eco-philosophy. We provided customised eco-tents that blend into the natural landscape, offering guests an intimate experience with the island’s unique flora and fauna. The tents are designed to withstand the harsh marine environment while leaving a minimal footprint.
Everglades National Park Eco Tents, USA
In Florida’s Everglades National Park, we contributed to the development of eco-tents that allow visitors to experience the wilderness responsibly. Elevated platforms protect the delicate ecosystem, and sustainable materials ensure longevity. The project enhances the park’s accommodation options while adhering to strict environmental regulations.
Rottnest Island Eco Retreat, Western Australia
On Rottnest Island, a protected A-Class Reserve, we collaborated to develop Discovery Rottnest Island—a retreat that offers 83 eco-tents ranging from family-friendly options to five-star glamping. The tents, linked by boardwalks to protect the fragile environment, provide ensuite bathrooms, private decks, and some even feature kitchenettes and beachfront views. This project required careful planning to preserve the island’s natural integrity while providing luxury accommodations.
